Bonnets and Kimonos

Tis the season of Field Trip Fun.  The last few weeks of school have culminated in hands on experiences that are the fruit of months of study and exploration.  This morning I sent one child to school in a pioneer bonnet and the other in a kimono, both laughing all the way.

After months of studying world cultures Eleanor's First Grade class is treated to some bento boxes at our neighborhood Japanese restaurant.  Twenty two First Graders dressed in 'kimonos' made out of  pillow cases walk from school to Kama Kura where they eat with chopsticks and 'try' sushi (or white rice in most cases!).  Eleanor's teacher, Ms. Ortmann, has worked tirelessly to teach them about France, Japan, Spain, and even Nigeria.  She is so creative and patient and AMAZING at what she does!

I arrive at school to join Eleanor for our lunch date just as the Third Grade is filing out for their field trip to a Pioneer Farm and schoolhouse.  Rynn has spent the year studying Chicago and Illinois history.   Pictured below is her teacher adjusting her bonnet and indulging me for a photo as the children file onto the bus.  If I could bottle up Mr. Truman and put him on our mantel I would.  A Golden Apple Award Winning teacher, he has encouraged Rynn to blossom this year both academically and socially.

Only a week to go... and two very happy little girls who think their school might be the coolest place on earth.
