We're on our way...

, originally uploaded by jasonchristopherlittle.

The last few weeks have been full. We have stood at the feet of Abraham Lincoln in 100 degree heat, been swimming with jelly fish at sunset in the Chesapeake Bay, sat at the table of a dear old college friend, hugged family in DC, watched colonists and indians at Jamestown, played on a sandbar in the Atlantic ocean, hugged more family as we gathered at the Outer Banks, said goodbye to dear friends in Portland, and today our travels begin. There is so much to share, so many pictures, so many emotions which haven't yet taken the shape of words. There will be quiet days ahead, days to blow bubbles on our new back deck, days to write and to read in our new city, but today our feet are on the ground as we begin our journey East. We have one more stop- a week in Bozeman, MT with my Dad- while Jason and Roscoe make the more tedious journey driving across the country. Thank you for all your notes of encouragement and for staying present with us in this transition. And the adventure begins...

Party On Roscoe!

, originally uploaded by jasonchristopherlittle.

While we are away growing saltier, browner, and immensely more relaxed in the warm sunshine of North Carolina, Roscoe is having his own fun at Double Dog Ranch. We are staying updated as they daily post pictures! Unfortunately, all my "little brown beach babies playing in the surf" pictures are being held captive in digital cameras...to be continued....

What's Your Soundtrack?

It is a quiet evening, a gentle rain falls outside with a cool spring breeze blowing in our cozy upstairs bedroom window.  I don’t mind the rain tonight.  As it brings in that fresh forest smell of Portland I am reminded of something Frederick Buechner wrote in his autobiographical work The Sacred Journey. He commented that rain makes home somehow feel more home.  So, it is fitting that home should feel more like home tonight in this final full week of our life here in Portland.  My mind shifts from thoughts as mundane as “Should I go ahead and buy one more package of toilet paper or should we just use up those last boxes of tissues in the linen closet?” to the more significant goodbyes and letting go of roots planted over the last three years.
A friend in Boston once asked me, “If someone would put a soundtrack to your life, like, say, your life was a movie, what would that soundtrack be?.”  I think about that tonight as the impending changes that lie ahead of us in the coming weeks bring back memories of changes in the past, of goodbyes to some and ‘Hello, my  name is..’ to others.  And then those 'hello' others become precious dear ones to whom we say goodbyes again.  For at least six months or more I have lived in...
Atlanta, GA
Chapel Hill, NC
Florence, Italy
Boston, MA
Philadelphia, PA
Houston, TX
Chattanooga, TN
Portland, OR
and...soon to come Chicago, IL
Sometimes I have been really ready to leave, sometimes not ready to leave but excited, sometimes ready but scared and sad, and sometimes a cocktail of all of these emotions. I am thankful for each place that I have landed.  I realize in hindsight the amazing opportunities given and people from whom I have learned and loved, and I don't regret.  Each place has changed me, has shown me more of the depth of the richness of God's goodness to us in relationship and his mercy to us in our failings. I think about the soundtrack that should accompany my life, the “mixed tape” (for you fellow children of the eighties), that would play.    What is yours?  Has it changed over time?  What songs would play if someone was watching your life?

A Walk in the Woods

We had a glorious winter here in the Pacific NW, and I was beginning to think that the whole rain thing is just a big scam to keep people from moving here.  And then May arrived.  And June.  Rain, rain, and more rain.  We decided to make the best of it over Memorial Day weekend and enjoy one of my favorite spots in Portland which is Forest Park.  With over seventy miles of trails through an Oregon temperate rainforest, Forest Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country.  We had a wonderful hike, saw slugs as long as my hand (banana slugs, I think?), got really nice and muddy, touched ferns, waded in creeks, and watched Roscoe lead us through the woods with his cheerful horselike gait.
