A Small Patch of Earth

On this crisp Sunday afternoon, in the last light of a short December day, our family takes a walk.

It isn't always easy, living in a big, sprawling urban area,
to get lost in the woods.

I am reminded today that it really doesn't take much
to to get a little nature fix.

A small patch of woods.
A few sticks.

A semi frozen lake.

And let the games begin.

 Who needs an iPad
when you can break up ice
with different size sticks?

And with a little imaginative exploration

you might find

a magical seashell from an ancient world,

a dragon's head
staring back at you,

or a mysterious message

hidden in a secret ice formation.

Or maybe just a new set
for the next Coen Brothers movie.

  1. What a lovely spot! Where is it? There is loveliness in the woods of Chicago...just takes some effort to find the right spots for an adventure, not out your backdoor! Love the pictures!

  2. It was a lovely spot...only a slight roar of the Interstate in the background. Just started that book you lent us- LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS. It inspires us to make that effort to keep trying to get the girls out even for a short jaunt.

  4. I want to visit the Forest Preserve sometime! It looks lovely, even if there is a muted "roar" of traffic....I want to read the book as well. Did you remember the author was our high school class president? He was an interesting boy in high school. Very "bookish" and intelligent. Fun to "connect" via the book.
