Grace's New Digs

Here is the church.

Here is the steeple.

Open the door

And see all the people!

We spend a lot of time telling our children that the church is not a building.
It is the people of God.  It is a motley crew who have been and are being changed by the love of God.  Sometimes that crew grows and grows until people are standing in the aisles and out the door (as happened on Easter), and it is time to find a new space to worship.  In a community like Chicago's North Shore this isn't always an easy task.  Land is expensive and has long been developed over a hundred years ago.  There are no places to build new churches and only rarely does a church come on the market for sale.  But last year one did. And instead of being torn down to become another lot of condos, it is now the new home of Grace Presbyterian Church of the North Shore.  There is still a lot of work to be done before it is ready for all of us to pack its pews, but everyone is getting excited about the new home. Today some folks from Grace enjoyed a barbecue at the new building to welcome the neighbors and some local police and firemen into what will be our new place of worship.  Exciting day!

  1. Reminds me of our church in Kansas, The Village Presbyterian Church. Clear windows with white pews and brown trim....very open and light. I love the traditional look. Will you keep it as such? How exciting as Grace begins this next step of the journey! What a blessing for you and the family.

  2. I think the plan is to keep the sanctuary as is...it is very light and clean feeling- more than the pics show. But, as someone in our church described the building, it is "like your great grandma's car...you know the one that has been in the garage for 20 years and never been driven? Looks pretty but the engine is rusted!." So true. The basement will be gutted for nursery space and folks are hopeful for an addition for sunday school rooms... lots to do!

  3. What a beautiful building! Love it. So different from our little church on the corner with tall palms and red tile roof.
